Hardness is not the same as sediment

Calcium and magnesium are dissolved minerals. Standard particulate filters are designed for suspended particles and should not automatically be expected to soften water.

Ion exchange actually removes hardness ions

Traditional softeners exchange hardness minerals for sodium or potassium ions. Compare capacity, regeneration efficiency, salt use, and service flow.

Conditioners are a different category

Salt-free systems are often marketed for scale control rather than hardness removal. Evaluate them according to the specific performance claim being made.

Drinking-water filtration is a separate decision

A household may use a whole-home softener for hardness while using a separate drinking-water filter for other contaminants or taste preferences.
