Compare the system’s continuous service flow with realistic simultaneous fixture demand. Large households should not choose a softener from grain capacity alone.
Why service flow matters
Pressure complaints often appear when several showers, faucets and appliances run at once. The softener becomes one restriction in the plumbing path.
Estimate peak demand
Add the fixtures that are realistically used together rather than every fixture in the home. Two showers plus a dishwasher is a more useful scenario than summing the entire plumbing code fixture load.
Larger valves and resin beds
Higher-capacity systems often—but not always—come with higher service-flow ratings. Check the manufacturer specification rather than assuming 64K automatically flows more than 48K.
