Iron and hardness are two different problems. In most homes with meaningful levels of both, the strongest architecture is dedicated iron treatment first, followed by a true ion-exchange softener.
Typical order: pressure tank → iron/sulfur filter → water softener → optional UV/polishing. A softener can sometimes handle modest dissolved iron, but dedicated iron pretreatment is more robust when iron loading is meaningful.
An iron filter oxidizes and captures iron. A water softener exchanges hardness minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Asking one unit to solve both can increase resin fouling, salt use and maintenance when iron is more than a minor side issue.
For most pressurized residential wells, dedicated iron treatment belongs upstream of the softener. That lets the softener focus on hardness and reduces iron loading on the resin.

Relevant when testing confirms iron, sulfur and/or manganese within the system's treatment range.
Use measured hardness, actual household water use and realistic service flow. The right grain capacity is based on hardness load, not bathroom count alone.
A matched iron-filter + softener package can simplify valve sizing, plumbing and warranty support. It is most useful when the source chemistry clearly requires both stages and the well pump can support the backwash flow.
At minimum, know iron, manganese, hardness and pH. Add sulfur testing when odor is present and bacteria testing when microbiological risk is part of the decision. A treatment train is only as good as the chemistry it was selected for.
