Reverse osmosis systems vary substantially in output, wastewater ratio, tank configuration, filter cost, monitoring features, and third-party certification. Those differences matter more than the number of “stages” printed on a product page.
What matters most
Tank or tankless
Traditional systems store treated water in a pressure tank. Tankless systems use higher-output membranes and often add electronic monitoring. The better format depends on space, flow expectations, power availability, and maintenance preference.
Read the certification scope
When a system cites NSF/ANSI standards, verify which standard applies and whether the complete system or a specific component is certified.
Consider wastewater and output together
A strong comparison looks at usable output and recovery efficiency together. Extremely high headline production is less useful if it does not match actual household demand or requires more complex maintenance.
Price replacement filters before buying
Annual filter and membrane costs can materially change the economics of an RO system. Compare recommended replacement intervals and current cartridge pricing before choosing a model.
