Water quality can move the schedule dramatically
A household with low sediment, moderate TDS and normal daily use may reach the long end of the manufacturer interval. A home with high sediment, hard water, high TDS or heavy use can load prefilters much faster and put more stress on the membrane.
Incoming pressure also matters. Low pressure can reduce production and change how the system behaves, while scaling or neglected pretreatment can reduce membrane performance long before the calendar interval is reached.
That is why model-specific schedules should be treated as a baseline rather than a guarantee.
Protecting the membrane is cheaper than replacing it early
Sediment and carbon prefilters exist partly to protect the membrane. A loaded sediment cartridge can reduce pressure. Exhausted carbon can allow disinfectant exposure that some membranes are not designed to tolerate over time.
Skipping prefilter changes to save money can therefore increase the chance of an earlier, more expensive membrane replacement. If you want to minimize long-term RO cost, consistent pretreatment maintenance is usually the better strategy.
Age is not the best membrane-replacement test
The membrane is often replaced every two or three years, but its actual condition is better judged by performance. Compare feed-water TDS with product-water TDS and calculate rejection percentage over time. A sustained decline is more informative than the membrane simply reaching its second birthday.

Different stages should usually be replaced on different schedules
Replacing every filter whenever the shortest-life cartridge is due is simple, but expensive. A membrane intended for roughly two years does not need to be discarded every six months just because the sediment prefilter does.
Keep a basic service log with the date and cartridge changed. That helps you spot unusually short life and prevents accidental early replacement of longer-life stages.
Flow, taste and rejection can all signal a problem
Flow decline can indicate a loaded prefilter. Taste or odor changes can point toward carbon or post-filter exhaustion. Rising product-water TDS can indicate declining membrane performance, but should be interpreted relative to feed-water TDS. Repeatedly short filter life can indicate an upstream water-quality issue that deserves separate treatment.
Annualize replacement cost by stage
To compare RO systems fairly, divide the cost of each cartridge by its expected service life and add the results. A $100 membrane lasting two years contributes roughly $50 per year; a $40 prefilter changed twice per year contributes $80 per year.
