EPA advises consumers to look for certification to NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 for PFAS reduction and to verify the product in the certification body’s directory when in doubt.

The contaminant claim may appear on packaging, a performance data sheet or the manufacturer website, but third-party directory confirmation is stronger evidence.

Why “tested for PFAS” is weaker than certification

A manufacturer-funded laboratory test can still be useful, but it may use conditions that do not correspond to a recognized certification protocol or full product life.

Certification provides a standardized framework and model-specific listing.

Whole-house vs point-of-use PFAS treatment

Whole-house PFAS reduction is possible, but point-of-use carbon or RO may provide stronger drinking-water evidence for less money.

If the primary goal is ingestion exposure, start with the kitchen tap rather than assuming every gallon in the house must be treated.

Current certification has limits

EPA notes that existing PFAS certification standards do not necessarily prove a filter will reduce PFAS all the way to EPA’s newest drinking-water regulatory levels.
