How tankless RO works
Tankless systems use a high-capacity membrane and pump to make purified water as the faucet opens. Most require electricity and use proprietary cartridges.
The benefit is no bulky pressure tank and generally higher membrane production rates. The tradeoff is that every glass depends on the pump, electronics and current membrane flow.
How traditional tank RO works
A traditional RO system slowly fills a pressure tank. When the faucet opens, stored purified water is pushed to the faucet without forcing the membrane to produce the entire flow instantly.
This architecture is older but highly serviceable. Many systems use industry-standard housings and inexpensive replacement cartridges.
TDS creep and first-draw water
When an RO membrane sits idle, dissolved ions can diffuse across the membrane. The first water produced after a rest period can therefore have higher TDS than steady-state permeate.
A storage tank can dilute some first-draw variability. Tankless systems may instead flush automatically or instruct the user to discard initial water, depending on design.
Wastewater claims need context
Headline pure-to-drain ratios usually describe production conditions, not necessarily every automatic flush. Tankless systems often perform periodic membrane flushing that can raise real household wastewater beyond the simple ratio printed on a product page.
Traditional tank systems can also waste significant water, especially without a permeate pump or with low feed pressure. Compare real operating behavior, not just one ratio.
Ownership cost and repairability
Tankless systems often tie the owner to proprietary filters, membranes, pumps and electronics. Traditional systems are more likely to accept common filter sizes and generic membranes.
For a buyer planning to keep a system for many years, replacement availability can matter more than the original purchase price.
