Salt-based vs salt-free: they do not produce the same water

Who should buy salt-based?

Choose ion exchange if your primary complaint is hard-water spotting, soap scum, poor lather or you want hardness readings to drop. It is the correct technology when “soft water” is the actual objective.

Who should buy salt-free?

Choose a conditioner if your main objective is scale reduction with no salt bags, regeneration cycles or drain connection. It can be a better operational fit, but it should not be marketed as chemically equivalent to softened water.

Important: salt-free conditioning performance depends on incoming water chemistry. Iron, manganese, sulfur, pH and disinfectant levels can affect suitability.
