Demand-initiated systems regenerate after measured capacity use. Simple timer systems can regenerate too early and waste salt when household demand is low.
Efficiency settings matter
Using more salt per regeneration can increase nominal resin capacity, but the extra capacity is not always proportional to the extra salt. Efficient programming often favors lower salt doses per cubic foot of resin.
