There is no single “metallic taste filter.” The right treatment depends on whether the source is iron, copper/plumbing corrosion, or a broader dissolved-water issue. Diagnose first, then buy the smallest system that solves the confirmed problem.
For confirmed iron in private-well water, whole-house iron treatment is usually the correct category. For a taste-only city-water problem, a certified under-sink carbon filter may be enough. For multiple dissolved contaminants at the drinking tap, reverse osmosis is the broader option.
If a well test shows meaningful iron and the home also has orange staining, whole-house iron treatment is more rational than a small drinking-water filter. Oxidation converts dissolved iron into a form that media can capture.

If utility information and testing do not point to a dissolved-metal problem, an under-sink carbon filter can be the simplest way to improve taste without RO wastewater or electricity. Verify the exact model claims rather than buying by “stage count.”
RO is the more comprehensive point-of-use category when a lab result shows several dissolved contaminants or when a buyer wants broad treatment at the kitchen tap. The tradeoffs are wastewater, proprietary filters on many systems and electricity on most tankless models.

If metallic taste is strongest after water sits, appears at one faucet only, or is paired with blue-green staining, plumbing corrosion may be the real problem.
