If the taste is new, persistent or accompanied by discoloration, do not buy a filter based on taste alone. Check whether the issue is one faucet or the whole home, compare cold and hot water, review your utility report if applicable, and use a certified laboratory when a specific contaminant is the concern.
The most common reasons water tastes metallic
Iron. Groundwater can naturally contain iron, and iron can also enter water from corroding distribution or household plumbing. Iron often produces orange or reddish staining as well as an unpleasant metallic taste.
Copper. Copper plumbing can release copper when water is corrosive. Reports of metallic taste or blue-green staining can be useful clues to copper corrosion, but taste cannot quantify copper; testing is the useful next step when corrosion is suspected.
Plumbing contact time. If water tastes worse first thing in the morning or after sitting for hours, premise plumbing may be contributing. If the taste improves after flushing, that pattern is useful evidence even though it does not identify the metal.
Hot-water equipment. If only hot water tastes metallic, the water heater, fittings or hot-water plumbing move higher on the list. Compare a cold-water sample from the same faucet before blaming the source water.

One faucet only
Inspect the aerator, fixture and local supply line. A whole-house treatment system is unlikely to be the first move.
Every cold-water faucet
Source water, service line or broader household plumbing becomes more plausible. Testing has more leverage.
Only after sitting
Corrosion and premise plumbing deserve attention. Follow the lab's first-draw or flushed-sample instructions.
Only hot water
Check the water heater and hot-water plumbing before treating the entire incoming supply.
A metallic taste does not tell you whether lead is present
EPA states that lead dissolved in drinking water cannot be seen, tasted or smelled. If lead is a concern because of older plumbing, a known lead service line, renovation work or local utility information, testing is the only reliable way to answer the question.
When a laboratory test is worth the money
Testing is especially useful when the taste is persistent, when staining suggests iron or copper, when a health-related contaminant is part of the concern, or when you are considering a treatment system that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars.
For private wells, CDC recommends regular testing and additional contaminant testing based on local conditions. A symptom such as metallic taste is a reason to discuss metals testing with a certified laboratory or health department.
Match the fix to the result
