The prefilter protects both flow and the expensive treatment tank
The sediment cartridge is the sacrificial stage. It catches particulate matter before water enters the long-life catalytic-carbon/KDF treatment tank. If it is neglected, pressure can fall and more solids can reach the main media.
That does not mean every dark cartridge must be replaced immediately. Appearance is only one signal. Household pressure, flow and the manufacturer schedule are more useful when deciding whether a cartridge has reached the end of practical service.
Three signs the cartridge should be changed before the calendar says so
1. Noticeable pressure loss. If several fixtures feel weaker than usual and the problem began gradually, a loaded prefilter is a reasonable first check. 2. Sediment breakthrough. Visible particulate downstream suggests the cartridge is no longer doing its job adequately. 3. Very dirty source water. Utility work, older mains or unusual sediment events can load a cartridge much faster than normal.
If replacing the cartridge immediately restores pressure, the prefilter was likely the restriction. If it does not, continue troubleshooting the whole-house system rather than assuming every pressure issue comes from the cartridge.
Annual cost is usually modest compared with the whole system
Because the sediment prefilter is replaced far more often than the main tank media, it should be included in the annual ownership estimate. The exact annual cost depends on current cartridge pricing and whether your water requires one or two replacements per year.
The important comparison is not simply cartridge price; it is the cost of keeping the long-life tank operating properly. An inexpensive prefilter that protects the expensive media is normal maintenance, not a sign the main system is short-lived.

Basic replacement workflow
Shut off the water according to the SpringWell service procedure, relieve pressure, remove the housing, replace the cartridge, inspect the O-ring and reseal the housing carefully. Restore water slowly and check for leaks before returning the system to normal use.
Do not overtighten the housing in an attempt to stop a leak. A twisted or dirty O-ring is often the real issue. If the housing is cracked or the seal is damaged, replace the affected hardware rather than forcing it tighter.
