Why is my tap water orange, rusty or brown?

Iron is the leading suspect, but the location and timing of the discoloration tell you whether to investigate the utility, a private well, household plumbing or the water heater first.

What orange or brown water usually means

Iron in source water. Dissolved iron is common in some groundwater. When exposed to oxygen, it can oxidize into rusty particles that color water and stain fixtures or laundry.

Corroding iron plumbing. Older iron or galvanized components can release rust, especially after water has remained stagnant.

Distribution-system disturbance. Hydrant flushing, main repairs or flow changes can disturb iron-containing deposits in municipal pipes. If neighbors have the same problem, the utility moves to the top of the list.

Water heater sediment or corrosion. If cold water is clear but hot water is brown, investigate the heater and hot-water plumbing rather than treating the incoming supply.

If normally clear municipal water suddenly turns brown, check the utility's outage/flushing notices and ask whether nearby main work occurred. A temporary distribution event should not automatically trigger a permanent treatment purchase.

If discoloration persists only in your home, household plumbing becomes more relevant and a plumber or water-quality test may provide more leverage than a filter recommendation.

Iron treatment depends on concentration, iron form, pH, manganese, sulfur and required flow. A cartridge that catches visible rust may not solve dissolved ferrous iron that emerges clear and turns orange after exposure to air.

Match treatment to the actual iron problem

Particulate rust or sediment: mechanical sediment filtration may protect downstream equipment, but find the corrosion or disturbance source.

Dissolved iron in a private well: oxidation followed by backwashing media filtration is common for significant iron, subject to the system's chemistry and flow limits.

Hardness plus iron: some softeners can tolerate limited iron, but a dedicated iron stage may be the better architecture when concentrations are higher. Size from a lab report rather than bathroom count alone.
