Sediment in Well Water: How to Choose Pre-Filtration

Sediment treatment should be matched to the type and quantity of material entering the home. A small cartridge may work for light particulate load but become impractical where sediment loading is heavy.

Identify the source

Sediment can come from the aquifer, well construction, corrosion, or other plumbing conditions. Persistent or sudden changes may warrant investigation beyond filtration.

Choose the right filtration format

Spin-down separators, cartridge filters, and backwashing media filters serve different particulate loads and maintenance preferences.

Protect downstream equipment

Pre-filtration can reduce fouling of softeners, carbon systems, UV equipment, and point-of-use filters when specified correctly.

Monitor pressure loss

An undersized or overloaded filter can create pressure problems. Gauge readings and replacement or cleaning intervals help track performance.
