City-water testing often emphasizes plumbing metals and disinfection byproducts. Well-water testing puts more weight on bacteria, groundwater chemistry, hardness, iron, manganese, nitrate and local land-use risks.
City water: test the tap, not only the utility
A utility report describes the public supply at regulated sampling points. It may not capture what happens in a particular building after the water moves through service lines and premise plumbing.
Lead and copper are classic examples where household plumbing can matter. Disinfection byproducts may also vary across a distribution system.
Private wells: the homeowner owns the testing problem
A private well can change over time and is influenced by geology, septic systems, flooding and nearby agriculture or industry. That is why routine microbial testing and periodic chemistry testing are important.
Iron, manganese, hardness, pH and sulfur are also central because they determine whether a treatment system will work as designed.
Why panel selection matters for filtration
A carbon filter, ion-exchange softener, iron filter, UV unit and reverse-osmosis system solve different problems. Without a useful test, it is easy to spend thousands on treatment that does not address the actual chemistry.
Testing does not need to be maximal. It needs to be relevant.
