Why chlorine is present
Municipal utilities may use chlorine as a disinfectant. The presence of a disinfectant residual does not by itself identify every other characteristic of the water.
Check the exact claim
If a filter is marketed for chlorine reduction, verify the model, test or certification basis, and rated capacity rather than assuming all carbon filters perform identically.
Whole-home vs. drinking-water treatment
Point-of-use treatment targets drinking and cooking water. Whole-home carbon systems are sized for much higher flow and have different maintenance requirements.
Do not confuse chlorine and chloramine
Some utilities use chloramine instead of free chlorine. Treatment performance can differ, so identify which disinfectant your utility uses before comparing systems.
